We put a bow on The Fabulous Fair Alphabet Game that the Mallett school kids have been playing since the Farmington Fair with a Blue Ribbon celebration at School last Friday. 87 kids won Blue Ribbons for filling out their cards! The picture to the right shows me handing a signed copy of The Fabulous Fair Alphabet book to the raffle winner Kali. Many thanks to Vicki Foster of the Mallett school for all her help, and to author Debra Frasier for her amazing support in providing crowns and game cards and ribbons. Big congratulations to all the kids who played the game!

Our second announcement involves our 18th annual Late Afternoon of Terror! This year we're thrilled to be teaming up with Michael Johnson's long standing UMF macabre read aloud, Just the Scary Parts, so that attendees are guaranteed an extra helping of terror! In doing so you'll be helping plan for the future because, as Clark Ashton Smith observed, "The skies are haunted by that which it were madness to know; and strange abominations pass evermore between earth and moon and athwart the galaxies. Unnameable things have come to us in alien horror and will come again. " Arnold Lobel further illustrates: "Frog and Toad sat close by the fire. They were scared. The teacups shook in their hands. They were having the shivers. It was a good warm feeling."

So bring your favorite tale of terror to read aloud or just come join us on October 28th from 6:00 - 7:00 pm and enjoy the nameless horrors and fetid vapors wafting up from forgotten vaults!

Here they are! Our weekly picks for the two best: two hardcover, two paperback, and two children's books. The very best new arrivals to leap out of the box and onto our shelves this week. Call or email us if you want more information on any of these titles, or to have us hold you a copy. Or stop in and check them out in person. We'd love to see you. Thanks as always for sharing your reading with us!

This is a terrific crossover historical novel exploring the fate of the dauphin following the French Revolution. It is told through dual narratives, a modern girl and a rediscovered diary of a girl her age caught amidst the revolution. Here's a write up of it by Vermont bookseller Sandy Scott.

"Andi Alpers is a girl lost in a dark labyrinth of depression since the tragic death of her younger brother. A visit to Paris with her estranged father leads Andi to the discovery of a long-lost Revolutionary-era journal and an obsession with the author's quest to save the life of a young prince. The mix of historical and modern drama creates a gripping tale of two girls, centuries apart, searching for redemption."

Scorch Trials is the very entertaining bridge book in the Maze Runner Trilogy. The main thing here is that fans of book one will be thrilled with book two. Dashner has left all kinds of intriguing threads open. Were Brenda and Jorge deliberately part of the experiment, what's with all this stuff about looking for patterns and predictive role playing, is WICKED good? We have no idea, which will really build enthusiasm for the finale. The only thing we know is that the last book in the trilogy isn't set in Maine because if it was then the last line in The Scorch Trials would have read "Wicked is wicked good" rather than "Wicked is good." Can't have everything. ...More
