Most John Irving fans have been asking the same question about his last few new releases, "will this one be a bit less odd." Random House is advertising Last Night in Twisted River as being a return to form. For example the jacket says that "Last Night in Twisted River is written with the historical authenticity and emotional authority of The Cider House Rules and A Prayer for Owen Meany. It is also as violent and disturbing as John Irving's breakthrough bestseller, The World According to Garp." If it does have the best qualities of his best novels that would be nice. On the other hand, even the worst case scenario of this tale of a 12 year old boy who mistakes a girl for a bear on a hunting trip, and takes to the woods as a fugitive with his father, has an upside. It's set in new Hampshire, so if it does turn out to be a bit weird at least it won't reflect on Maine. ...More |
