December 14, 2010

As a snowflake gaining in moisture while it descends, the Holiday Season is speeding ever more swiftly to the ground. With the demands of the season upon us, and the need to provide simple pleasures to embellish Christmas mornings, one thought rises above all others. We wonder, much as famished, storm battered sailors, scanning the horizon in hopes of seeing land, where is the 2010 DDG Stocking Stuffer of the Year Award announcement, what is this year's winner? Our annual quest to provide sensationally fun stocking stuffers got off to a shockingly bad start when it was discovered that last year's winner, The Atomic Whirl-O, pictured to the right, had been taken out of production due to a spat between the designers and the manufacturers, and was totally unavailable. Apart from having to reflect on the fleeting nature of fame and the vagaries of fate, we had to roll up our sleeves and strive to fill the void.

The results have been very gratifying, with such stellar items as the Butterfly Flyer,  Floating Fairies, Fun Straws, and the compelling Dino-Soars making their debut appearance in our stocking stuffer area. There were three newcomers though which really stood out, the amazing California Creation Wind Up Toys, the mind boggling 3-D bookmarks, and the dashing Puzzle Vehicle Sets. To settle things out we gathered together our three finalists on the counter to display their abilities to the judge. It was agreed that Peter, The Mayor of the Windup Toys, whom we have interviewed previously, would do the judging as his reputation for impartiality is beyond reproach. The judging, pictured to the right, ended rather surprisingly with Peter recusing himself, saying that the 3-D bookmarks were too mesmerizing, and were preventing him from concentrating, while his desire to ride the train around the puzzle track was too strong to resist and he was concerned about ending up injuring himself. Indeed all three finalists were so busy playing with each other that it became necessary to call this year's award a three way draw, and therefore to simply announce 2010 DDG Stocking Stuffers of the Year Award. Stop in and try out our winners at the store!

Here they are! Our weekly picks for the two best: two hardcover, two paperback, and two children's books. The very best new arrivals to leap out of the box and onto our shelves this week. Call or email us if you want more information on any of these titles, or to have us hold you a copy. Or stop in and check them out in person. We'd love to see you. Thanks as always for sharing your reading with us!

Trickster's Girl is set in a very believable 2089. Security concerns have dug in, and life in the United States is lived literally either on or off the surveillance grid. The living environment presented is very convincing, and the psychological and environmental adaptions involved are subtle and far more disturbing than those on offer in more over the top totalitarian dystopias. Trickster's Girl, which will be followed by Traitor's Boy, is the work of a mature hand which still commands the nexus of youth. ...More
