Clash of the Titans: Round 2
Clash of the Titans is a feature in which Amy and I engage in a fierce, almost unmannerly, debate on a literary topic. Our subject this time? The Unhealthy Truth!

KB: Modern chemistry could never have a negative effect on food production, right?
Amy: Actually, the topic of our fierce debate this week is whether the foods we eat are playing a role in the new and disturbing childhood epidemics of autism, ADHD, food allergies and asthma. I'm reading a fascinating book on the subject: The Unhealthy Truth, by Robyn O'Brien. O'Brien, a self-described patriotic MBA from a conservative Houston family, admits she is an unlikely critic of America food industry. But when her youngest child had a severe allergic reaction to eggs, she became determined to understand how this could happen. Thanks to her experience as a equities analyst and a Fullbright scholar, she was a skilled researcher. Her findings led her to some startling facts about genetically modified foods.
KB: Yes well what if people just feel like being in denial about those startling facts?
Amy: Despite your potent argument there, let's just take a look at some trends in children's health. One in eleven children has asthma. One in four is affected by allergies. One in 150 children is born with autism. Clearly, something is very wrong.
KB: Hmmn. Well that does stand to reason.
Amy: More than anything, this book reminds me of Rachel Carson's groundbreaking Silent Spring, which brought awareness of the dangers of the pesticide DDT. We still do a poor job regulating the chemical industry and today it is our own children who are suffering. I cannot recommend this book strongly enough to parents of children with health issues. Anyone interested in the corruption of America's food supply will also find this fascinating.
KB: Well okay let's call this a draw and hope for a more decisive outcome next time!
