On May 19th Susan Hand Shetterly will be coming to the Farmington Public Library to read from her new book Settled in the Wild, which has been selling well at Indepedent bookstores around the country. Event details are here. We're excited about this event, in part because Settled in the Wild is a lovely book, and in part because Susan was brave enough to agree to a hard hitting Weekly Top 2 interview!

KB: Susan, one of the things Settled in the Wild explores is the way human beings and animals share a common habitat and impact each other. If any one animal could read your book and converse with you about it which animal would it be?
Susan: Well, that's a funny question. I'm looking out the window at a Tom Turkey and a hen. Maybe a turkey is a good place to start. One thing that interests me about these magnificent animals is that they are very theatrical in breeding season. They disappeared because they were over hunted and their habitat was changed. Maine's Inland Fishery and Wildlife division did a reintroduction and it was very, very successful, some people might say too successful.
KB: I noted that Odin gave you some good advice on dealing with your raven friend Chac. I loved that section. Are the Norse Gods apt for other decision making situations?
Susan: No.
KB: Now you tell me! Hmmnn. Now Zeus had two eagles, rather than ravens, on his shoulders. If Chac had been an eagle would Zeus have led you in a different direction?
Susan: Obviously eagles would have moved me in a different direction. To me what's exciting is that any species of wild bird and insect you encounter has its own particular adaptation to the place where it lives and it's interesting, and its exciting, even though we don't usually see the whole thing, we just see glimpses, if we're lucky.
KB: Thanks Susan. Settled in the Wild is a lovely book and we look forward to your sharing it with us on the 19th!
Susan: I'm really looking forward to it. Thanks!
