July 15, 2008

One of our slogans at DDG is "anything for a pal" so when friend of the store Alice Bloom asked us to let folks know about a Jim Hall reading she's sponsoring down in Mt. Vernon we said sure. Here's a link to the information on the Jim Hall Reading. Speaking of Alice Bloom, how remiss would we be not to provide a link to the reading featuring Alice, Bob Kimber and Wes Mcnair coming up this Thursday evening for A Place Called Maine.

The week of July 15th features not only some really high quality, high profile new releases, such as those we feature below, but also some really high profile, low quality new releases such as the book by Madonna's brother Christopher released today called, scintillatingly enough, Life With My Sister Madonna
. This book follows in the tradition of other sleazy high profile books such as A Royal Duty by Diana's Butler, and If I Had Done It, by O.J. Simpson whose contents were kept secret, supposedly because they were so explosive that they required secrecy in order to escape court orders that would prevent their important stories from seeing the light of day. After A Royal Duty, which was sold into stores without any information regarding title or subject, professional book buyers realized the obvious, that this sort of secrecy represented a cheap sales ploy rather than a legitimate public interest. They subsequently refused to buy titles sight unseen, and so titles like If I Did It, and Life with My Sister Madonna have had to poke their heads out into public view a bit before seeing print. In the present case the cover was kept secret until the last minute, see the image to the right. Our thinking was that trying to dish dirt on a sibling who had left no dirt undished on herself might possibly fall short of every credible standard of book purchasing. That was our thinking until today, that is, when the image to the left was dramatically exposed. Gads, if we'd only known in advance we would have ordered hundreds of copies instead of none!

Here they are! Our weekly picks for the two best: two hardcover, two paperback, and two children's books. The very best new arrivals to leap out of the box and onto our shelves this week. Call or email us if you want more information on any of these titles, or to have us hold you a copy. Or stop in and check them out in person. We'd love to see you. Thanks as always for sharing your reading with us!

With the remarkable Suite Francaise having whetted our appetite for more Nemirovsky, it's fortunate that a second work, originally written in 1941, has resurfaced. The book was given to her family members in segments, just prior to the author's fatal journey to Auschwitz, and only restored last year. The paperback edition of Fire in the Blood has two things going over it's hardcover predecessor; price of course, and a much nicer cover. ...More
