Northeast What is Northeast? That is hard to say, even for its editors who have seen it go from An International Literary Annual with thirty-three initial subscribers to a magazine and small press book series several times selected by editors and authors as one of the USA's ten best. What still seems odd, however, is that with but thirty-three initial subscribers to sustain it for its first years, 300 to 600 copies of each issue still found their ways into readers' hands around the world. Work from our early series was smuggled behind the Iron Curtain, bought by people in Japan, Germany, Switzerland, Arabia, and translated into Dutch, Hungarian, Japanese, Russian and Arabic. After the Bodleian Library of Oxford University bought a complete run in the 1970's, collectors became aware of us. Since then, other collectors in England, Europe, Israel, Japan, and Australia have followed. We have sustained it for thirty-37 years without government or private grants or aid, for we believe literature is not just good writing. It is the expression of minds or souls addressing kindred, and thus shaping the human spirit. As such, it needs no economic or political subsidy to sustain it. It sustains us. What is Northeast? We hope you will find out. Subscriptions include an issue of Northeast, and a combination of several books from our Juniper Books Series, the William N. Judson Series, the Inland Seas Series, and a Chickadee which contains contemporary haiku, tanka, or short poems. The cost per year to individuals is $33.00 and to Institutions $38.00 (US currency), plus foreign postage. To subscribe to Northeast please send a check to the following address...
