Here we come to a book that grabs readers from the first moment they enter its pages. Half Bad affords the sublime fascinations of an alluring, unsafe narrator set in a deeply grey political landscape whose powers are determined to be black and white at terrible cost. Its readers find themselves carried and then swiftly captured in an irresistible current of intrigue and imagination as visceral as it is elegant

Knights of the Borrowed Dark breathes new life into established fantasy traditions. Familiar themes of a reluctant orphan hero, secret orders, and parallel dimensions, take surprising twists and turns, buoyed by unusually fine writing and well developed characters. A deeply satisfying fantasy Knights of the Borrowed Dark is a perfect book to share with a young reader or to give to an older one.

The Lost Property Office is a fantasy rich in history. Built around a secret organization underpinning the British Commonwealth its appealing lead character, Jack Buckles, is a thirteenth (an ominous number) generation tracker, an ability grounded in having the condition of synesthesia, sensory overlap. Trackers put synesthesia to magical use, 'sparking' off objects containing minerals, such as stone walls touched by others in the past so that they can see what happened in the past, becoming high powered detectives. The author has synesthesia himself and the book carries with it a remarkable breakneck pace, filled with dynamic sensory images. The fast pace, tight focus, intriguing secrets, strong characters, engaging villain, and all around excitement make The Lost Property Office an exceptionally appealing reading experience.
The Glass Sentence is a marvelous work of imaginative fantasy and adventure for all ages. Here is my interview with it's delightful author, S.E. Grove.

This is a wonderful fantasy novel, translated from the Finnish. The island of The Red Abbey, in which only women may step, is steeped in tradition. Beautifully written, this is a rich coming of age story with real depth. You can read more about the book here.
I read heavily in the middle grade genre. So I am often on the look out for those special books that have an appeal to adults who may still be reading to their children while, at the same time, have great story for younger readers. The Wild Robot fits this bill. It is a sweet, gentle story about Roz the robot and her self discovery while shipwrecked on an island. Look out for the falling pinecones!--Karin
Every decision has a consequence. Lillian Kindred has made a decision that leads to a magical journey to take control of her destiny. Wonderful illustrations and Charles De Lint's beautiful writing make this book a real treat!
If you haven't met Dory you are missing an experience! She is witty, she is funny, she is the annoying little sister we can't help but love!

That difficult to capture period, when children are 11sh and have one toe in adolescence and the rest of their weight still resting behind that line, is the specialty of Maine author Cynthia Lord. She hits the mark yet again with A Handful of Stars. The book is the story of a friendship between a small town Maine girl, Lily, and Salma, a girl Lily's age whose family is in the area to work Maine's blueberry harvest. A terrific story with universal childhood themes is made richer here for the inclusion of an element of social significance, the lives of migrant workers in rural Maine.
